Some injuries are common in car crashes

Car crashes can lead to several injuries. The exact injuries that you might suffer depend on the circumstances and specifics of the crash.

There are some injuries that are more common than others. Here are some that might occur in a car crash:

Brain injuries

Brain injuries are possible in a car accident, even if you don't hit your head on anything. The jostling motion of the crash can make the brain squish against the inside of the skull, which can cause some serious bruising on the brain. One interesting thing about brain injuries is that they might not show up right away at the scene of the crash.

Instead, you might not notice symptoms until a few days or weeks have elapsed. This is one reason why watching for symptoms is imperative. If you start to experience any headaches, vomiting, sleep changes, dizziness or other signs of a brain injury, you should seek medical care immediately.

Spinal cord injuries

The force of the impact of the crash can lead to spinal cord injuries. These are often serious, but some effects might only be temporary. The risk of a spinal cord injury is one reason why you shouldn't move a person too much after a car crash, especially if they are experiencing weakness in a limb or the inability to move one. Spinal shock, which can make the injury seem worse, is an issue in some of these crashes. Spinal cord injuries require immediate medical attention.

Broken or fractured bones

The impact of the car accident can put so much pressure on bones that they fracture or break. While some fractures are obvious because the bone breaks through the skin, others aren't as obvious. Some signs of a fractured bone include severe pain at the site of the injury and being unable to move the impacted limb as you usually can.

Neck injuries

Whiplash is a neck injury that can lead to severe pain. This is most often associated with rear-end crashes, but it can occur in any accident that forces the head to fling around. Whiplash is caused by the structures in the neck, including the tendons, being overstretched.

If you suffer any injury in a car crash, getting medical care is a priority. Once that is done, you will want to consider seeking compensation for the damages that you suffer because of the crash.
